Panther Hollow Lake

The lake sits below Phipps, Flagstaff Hill and Panther Hollow Road. Anderson Playground is a practical upper arrival for steps down toward the lake; use the exact lake pin and expect a climb back out.

Use legal two-hour parking near Anderson Playground or another mapped Schenley entrance, then continue on foot. There is no lakefront parking lot and closed bridges can alter vehicle circulation.

Visit the lake and connecting natural trails in daylight under posted park and trail rules. Flooding, mud, ice, fallen trees and maintenance can close or complicate the approach.

There is no dependable restroom at the lake. Use an open staffed facility before descending into Panther Hollow.

Trail and lake-view access is free. This is not a staffed boating, swimming or rental facility.

The hollow approach includes steep grades, steps and natural surfaces and is not a step-free lake visit. Choose Schenley Plaza or another developed park destination when a firm level route is essential.

Leashed dogs may use open trails under City rules. Keep animals out of the water and under close control on steep, muddy and narrow sections.

The lake can be a short nature destination for trail-ready children, but steep access, rail infrastructure, water and limited facilities require close supervision.

This is a trail destination, not a swimming lake or drive-up picnic area. Download the park map, visit in daylight and avoid the hollow during thunderstorms, flooding, snow or ice.

Frequent buses serve Oakland and Schenley Plaza; lower areas require a downhill walk and uphill return.
