Highland Park

City park areas generally follow posted park hours, with unlighted natural areas best used in daylight. Highland Park Pool, Pittsburgh Zoo, concerts, movies, reserved shelters and recreation facilities keep separate seasonal or event schedules.

For the fountain, gardens and reservoir, use legal spaces around Highland Avenue and Reservoir Drive and read posted restrictions. The pool, playgrounds, Bud Harris Cycling Track and zoo are spread across different edges; zoo visitors should navigate to the free main lot at 7370 Baker Street.

Use Highland Avenue for the formal Entry Garden and continue uphill toward Reservoir Drive for the reservoir loop. Route directly to 151 Lake Drive for the pool or 7370 Baker Street for the zoo; one broad park pin is not a practical arrival for every facility.

Do not assume an always-open restroom at the garden or reservoir loop. The pool has facilities only during its seasonal operating hours, and zoo restrooms require zoo access; use a confirmed staffed facility before starting a longer walk.

The park grounds, entry garden, reservoir views, playgrounds, courts and ordinary paths are free. The zoo charges admission, the pool may require a daily pass or membership, and food, programs, shelter reservations and special events can cost separately.

Reservoir Drive improvements added traffic calming and accessibility work, and the entry garden and reservoir area include paved approaches. Grades remain significant between zones; the zoo publishes separate mobility, sensory, restroom and rental guidance.

Leashed dogs may use ordinary outdoor park areas under City rules, but keep them out of playground equipment, pools, courts and posted facilities. The Pittsburgh Zoo prohibits personal animals, including in the parking lot; ADA-defined service animals follow the zoo's separate policy.

For a free family visit, pair the fountain and reservoir with a chosen playground rather than trying to cover every zone. The Super Playground, Farmhouse Playground, Pool Grove Playground and Rhododendron Playground are separate facilities; the pool and zoo each require their own schedule and arrival plan.

Pittsburgh Regional Transit serves Highland Avenue and the zoo area, but stops are not interchangeable across this large hillside park. Plan the final walking grade to the garden, reservoir, pool or Baker Street zoo entrance before choosing a route.

The reservoir is not a swimming area; it is drinking-water infrastructure and not a wading destination. Pool hours change seasonally, zoo construction is altering internal circulation through spring 2027, and summer concerts or movies can increase traffic around Reservoir Drive; check the exact operator before leaving.

Check Pittsburgh weather, air quality, river levels and operator alerts. Steep trails, pools, spray parks, fountains, docks and events can close independently.
