Schuylkill Banks

Use trail sections from dawn to dusk under Philadelphia trail regulations; the broader park system has a 10 p.m. curfew. The Walnut Street restroom, dock gate, tours, nearby recreation centers and events keep shorter schedules, and construction can close an access point without closing the whole corridor.

There is no single Schuylkill Banks lot. The official map identifies paid Center City garages and meters, limited South 24th Street spaces, Philadelphia Museum of Art parking and parking near some southern trailheads; select the exact segment and a legal backup before driving.

For the Boardwalk and central skyline route, use Walnut, Locust or the South Street Bridge ramp. Fairmount Water Works and Lloyd Hall serve the northern end; Grays Ferry and Bartram's Mile use different entrances farther south. A broad park pin can leave you miles from the feature you want.

The staffed restroom just south of Walnut Street is normally open daily from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., subject to staff availability. The official map also identifies facilities at Lloyd Hall and Bartram's Garden; hours differ, so do not begin a long out-and-back assuming the next restroom is open.

Walking, running, cycling, overlooks and ordinary trail access are free. Guided river tours, rentals, parking, food, permitted events and nearby ticketed attractions may charge separately.

The 15-foot-wide Boardwalk and central paved trail provide developed riverfront routes. The South Street Bridge has an ADA-accessible ramp on its northeast side, where bicycles must be walked; rail crossings, curb approaches, detours, crowding, flood debris and winter conditions can still change the usable route.

Leashed dogs may use the trail under the City's maximum six-foot leash rule; Schuylkill Banks asks visitors to keep pets on a short leash around mixed traffic. Off-leash use belongs inside the designated dog runs at Schuylkill River Park, not on the trail or Boardwalk.

The Boardwalk overlooks and short Walnut-to-South loop are strong family highlights, but the corridor has fast bicycles, ramps, working rail crossings and an open river edge. Keep children out of the travel lane when stopping and use Schuylkill River Park for a playground or dog-run-specific outing.

Center City buses, trolleys, Regional Rail and 30th Street Station can reach central access points on foot. Choose transit for the exact segment: Walnut and Locust differ from Water Works, Grays Ferry and Bartram's Mile, and the return trip may not end where it began.

Check the live map and construction blog before leaving. Market Street bridge rehabilitation is expected to affect the Market Street Ramp and trail under the bridge during 2026-27, with Chestnut Street as the nearby alternate, while a Grays Ferry trail sinkhole was under construction in July 2026.

The river corridor is exposed to heat, lightning, wind, flooding and winter ice. Water levels and storm debris can affect low trail sections; turn around at barriers or standing water and do not enter the river as an improvised swimming area.

The 2,000-foot Boardwalk extends over the river from Locust Street to the South Street Bridge. It is 15 feet wide and includes four widened overlooks; use Walnut or Locust for the central approach or the northeast South Street Bridge ramp from the south.

Yes. The staffed public restroom is on the trail just south of Walnut Street and is normally open daily from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., subject to staff availability. It can close while the outdoor trail remains open, so use it before continuing south.

There is no public motorized launch. The Walnut Street dock has limited public small-watercraft access only when no scheduled program is using it; staff must open the gate, users must stay in sight and the current limit is 30 minutes. Guided kayak tours require advance planning, arrive 15 minutes early, and are for ages 12 and older with an adult required for participants under 18.

Keep right, pass only when clear, move fully out of the travel lane when stopping and walk bicycles on signed ramps. Keep children and short-leashed pets out of the moving lane, and use the numbered emergency-location stickers on trail lights when reporting an incident.

Plan by current segment rather than assuming a seamless recreational path. Center City, Grays Ferry and Bartram's Mile connections continue to evolve, and temporary work such as the July 2026 Grays Ferry sinkhole repair can interrupt the expected route. Market Street bridge rehabilitation is a multi-year project expected to close the Market Street Ramp and trail beneath the bridge at times in 2026-27; use the nearby Chestnut Street ramp when directed. The organization also reported Grays Ferry sinkhole construction in July 2026. Follow posted detours rather than bypassing barriers.
