Gwynns Falls Leakin Park

Outdoor park areas are generally used from dawn to dusk. Carrie Murray Nature Center, Orianda Mansion, programs and special events have separate limited schedules; confirm before making them the purpose of a trip.

Parking is distributed among Windsor Mill Road, Carrie Murray Nature Center, Winans Meadow and smaller trailheads. Navigate to a named destination and do not leave valuables visible in a vehicle.

The park is divided by roads, streams and steep wooded terrain. Choose Carrie Murray Nature Center, Winans Meadow, Crimea Estate or a specific Gwynns Falls Trail access point before departure.

Dependable restrooms are concentrated at Carrie Murray Nature Center and programmed facilities when open. Remote trails, meadows and historic sites may have no facilities.

General park and trail access are free. Programs, camps, reservations and permitted events may charge.

Carrie Murray Nature Center has a small paved approach with an accessible space, while most woodland trails include roots, mud, grades and uneven surfaces. The paved Gwynns Falls Trail is the most predictable route.

Leashed dogs are allowed on ordinary park trails. Keep dogs controlled near wildlife, cyclists and equestrians, and follow restrictions at the nature center and historic buildings.

Carrie Murray Nature Center and Winans Meadow are the easiest family anchors. Longer woodland routes require a downloaded map, sturdy footwear, water and close supervision.

MTA buses reach several surrounding neighborhoods, while the Gwynns Falls Trail connects by bicycle and foot. Service does not eliminate long distances inside the park.

Cell coverage, signs and facilities vary in the wooded interior. Download a map, tell someone your route, avoid stream crossings during high water and leave enough daylight for the return.

Check Baltimore thunderstorms, flash-flood risk, stream levels, heat, fallen-tree notices, snow and ice. Low trail sections and stream crossings can become unsafe even when a different entrance remains open.

The official Friends map identifies four practical arrival areas: I-70 Park and Ride for Trail Head 1, Eagle Drive for the Crimea Estate area, Winans Meadow for Trail Head 2 and Windsor Mill Road for Trail Head 3. Pick the destination first; these entrances are not interchangeable.

Download the Friends group's 2024 high-resolution trail-map brochure before leaving home. The park is about 1,000 wooded acres, and a generic map pin does not show which entrance, trailhead or estate area serves the route you want.

Baltimore City describes Carrie Murray Nature Center as a year-round nature-program hub with live-animal encounters, park exploration, school programs, Forest Preschool, summer camps, public programs, events and volunteer opportunities. Program availability is scheduled, so call or check the activity catalog before expecting drop-in access.
