Washington Square and Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

The square fills the block between 6th, 7th, Walnut and Locust Streets. The Tomb is within the park, so use its exact pin rather than the Independence Mall or Hall entrance.

There is no dedicated free lot. Walk south from Independence Hall, use transit or select a paid garage before driving; surrounding curb spaces follow city signs and restrictions.

The outdoor square is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, year round. Lighting, weather, maintenance and public-safety conditions still affect the quality of a late visit.

There is no documented public restroom in the square. Use facilities near Independence Hall or the Visitor Center during their posted hours before walking south.

Square and Tomb access are free and no ticket is required.

NPS identifies Washington Square as wheelchair accessible, with paved public walks. Tree roots, leaves, snow, wet paving and temporary work can affect individual path segments.

Leashed pets are allowed outdoors under the NPS six-foot rule; remove waste and keep animals off the memorial structure and protected plantings.

The open lawn, more than 30 tree species and memorial make a calm outdoor counterpoint to security lines. It is not a playground and has no on-site restroom, so plan a shorter stop with young children.

The Tomb contains unidentified Revolutionary War remains and an eternal flame. Treat the central memorial as a burial and commemorative site, not seating or play equipment, and use daylight for the best interpretive visit.

SEPTA's 5th Street/Independence Hall station is beside the Visitor Center and Liberty Bell area, and PATCO's 8th & Market station is a short walk west. The historic district is compact, so choose one arrival point and walk between most major sites rather than moving a car.
