Baltimore Waterfront Promenade

The outdoor promenade is generally available daily, but individual parks, bridges, attractions, fountains and construction zones keep separate schedules or may close temporarily.

Use a paid garage near the portion you plan to visit; one parking location is not convenient for the entire waterfront. Read event rates and avoid assuming street spaces will be available.

For a first visit, begin at the Baltimore Visitor Center at 401 Light Street. For playgrounds use Rash Field or Pierce's Park, and for Fells Point or Canton choose a closer eastern starting point.

Public restroom access is tied to the Visitor Center, staffed attractions and open businesses; there is no continuous chain of dependable outdoor facilities along the full route.

Walking the promenade and entering its public parks is free. Garages, Water Taxi, museums, attractions, food and ticketed events cost separately.

Most central promenade segments are paved and broadly level, but bridge transitions, construction detours, brick surfaces and crowded events can affect step-free travel.

Leashed dogs are welcome on ordinary outdoor promenade segments and many parks. Attractions, fountains, play areas and events set separate restrictions.

Rash Field's adventure play and skate park, West Shore Park's seasonal fountain and Pierce's Park are the strongest free child-focused stops. Water edges require continuous supervision.

Charm City Circulator, MTA bus and rail, bikeshare and the Water Taxi serve different waterfront sections. A one-way promenade walk can be paired with transit for the return.

The harbor is an active urban waterway, not a general swimming area. Rash Field Phase I remains open while Phase II construction creates detours; the new lawn, gardens, beach and paths are expected to open by the end of summer 2026. Check current Waterfront Partnership notices.

Check Baltimore heat, lightning, wind and air quality before a waterfront walk. The route is exposed, pavement radiates heat, bridges and piers can be windy, and storms can interrupt fountains, events, Water Taxi service and construction access independently.

Waterfront Partnership reports the fountain open for the 2026 season and says it operates approximately daily from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. between West Shore Park and the Visitor Center. Baltimore Recreation and Parks controls operation, so report outages to 311 and do not treat the schedule as guaranteed.

Phase I remains open with Jake's Skatepark, Adventure Play, the BGE Pavilion, Nature Play and the Overlook. Phase II construction affects the Shade Lawn and creates changing detours; Waterfront Partnership anticipates the new lawn, public beach, volleyball and nature-trail area in late summer 2026.

Use Rash Field for climbing and skating, West Shore Park for the seasonal fountain, and Pierce's Park for interactive sculptures, a musical fence and willow tunnel. The three stops serve different ages and are separated by waterfront walking; supervise continuously at every unfenced water edge.

No ordinary promenade segment is a casual swimming beach. Waterfront Partnership does not recommend harbor swimming outside planned events because of boat traffic, changing weather and intermittent pollution; Broadway Pier specifically permits fishing, boating and kayaking activity but not swimming.
