U.S. National Arboretum

Grounds are normally open daily 8 a.m.-5 p.m. except December 25, with last entry at 4:30 p.m. Current summer weekdays may extend to 8 p.m.; buildings and the bonsai museum use shorter hours.

Free designated parking is distributed near major collections. Do not park on roads or lawns; weekends, azalea bloom, and events increase demand near the Columns and bonsai museum.

Use the R Street entrance as the primary visitor approach. The New York Avenue gate closes earlier under current schedules, so do not rely on it for a late-day exit.

Visitor restrooms are available near the Administration Building and Arbor House, with additional seasonal facilities. Identify the nearest open facility before walking into a distant collection.

Admission and general parking are free. Programs, events, tours, and partner services may use reservations or separate fees.

Major buildings and collections have developed approaches, but the 451-acre landscape includes slopes, long distances, garden paths, and natural surfaces. Drive between distant collections when needed.

Leashed pets are permitted only under current Arboretum rules and may be restricted from buildings, collections, and events. Review posted pet guidance and protect research plantings.

The Columns, bonsai museum, lawns, and seasonal gardens work well for families. The grounds are too large to cover casually on foot, so choose two or three collections.

Public transit reaches surrounding neighborhoods but not every collection. Confirm the gate, final walking route, and closing time; cycling or rideshare may be easier than a long walk from transit.

Collections peak at different times. Check bloom and event information, save the official map, use R Street for late-day visits, and leave enough time to return to the correct gate before closing.

Bring water and a backup snack unless a currently open concession is confirmed near the exact destination. Food availability, vending, and event vendors are not consistent across this large public place.
