Allegheny Observatory

From the Riverview Avenue entrance, continue uphill on the observatory drive to the domed building at the top of Observatory Hill. The Visitor Center is lower and east across Riverview Drive; a broad park pin will not take you to the correct event entrance.

Use legal spaces along the observatory drive and follow event instructions or staff direction. Parking is limited and shared with park visitors, so arrive before the reservation time and never block the loop, gates or emergency access.

The building is a private research laboratory and is not open for casual walk-ins. In 2026, public tours run on announced Thursday and Friday dates from spring into fall, generally 8:00-10:00 p.m.; registration is currently full, with a waiting list and possible additional September dates.

The operator does not advertise the building as an open public restroom stop. Facilities, if available, are tied to a scheduled indoor program; use a confirmed park facility before arriving and ask the Observatory directly when an accommodation is essential.

Public tours and listed Observatory events are free, but reservations are required and popular dates fill weeks ahead. Registration closes the day before a tour or when capacity is reached.

The historic building is partially accessible. Contact the Observatory before reserving to discuss the route and needed accommodation; a tour includes walking through telescope domes kept at outdoor temperature.

The Observatory publishes no general pet-admission policy for its private research building. Do not assume pets can join an indoor program; contact the operator in advance about a service animal or other access need.

Tours combine a presentation, a building walk and weather-dependent viewing through the 13-inch refractor. The operator recommends leaving children under seven at home, and everyone should dress for outdoor temperature inside the domes.

A park visit does not include entry to the Observatory. Reserve an announced program, verify that it is actually at the Observatory, dress warmly even in summer and understand that clouds can prevent telescope viewing without canceling the history tour.

Transit serves Perrysville Avenue and streets around the park, but the Observatory, Chapel Ridge, Grand Avenue and Mairdale entrances are not interchangeable. Plan the final grade and walk to the exact destination before choosing a stop.
