Mellon Park Walled Garden

Use the exact Walled Garden pin south of Fifth Avenue, between the arts-campus buildings and the former Mellon estate landscape. The playground, spray park, shelter and ballfields are across Fifth in the recreation zone.

The City does not document a dedicated garden-only visitor lot. Use legal curb parking around Shady, Reynolds, Beechwood or Fifth, read restrictions and keep event access clear; do not assume arts-campus or private-school spaces are public park parking.

The outdoor garden follows posted City park hours, generally 6:00 a.m.-11:00 p.m. with some facilities closing at sunset. Permitted events, maintenance, severe weather and lighting conditions can alter practical access; visit in daylight when the route is unfamiliar.

The City's current facility inventory lists no indoor bathroom at the Walled Garden. Permitted events may stage sanitary facilities on hard surfaces, but ordinary visitors should not expect those to be present.

Ordinary garden and memorial viewing is free. Private or organized use requires the appropriate City reservation or event permit, and permitted vendors or event services have separate costs.

The formal garden includes paved and lawn surfaces, terraces and limestone steps. Because entries and grades differ, use the exact garden pin and confirm the most suitable curb-to-garden route before leaving when step-free access is essential.

Dogs must remain leashed under City rules and are not allowed in playgrounds or courts. In this formal garden, keep pets out of planted beds, memorial lights, fountains and permitted-event areas and clean up promptly.

The glowing star memorial and historic fountain make this a short, quiet family stop for children who can respect planted beds and artwork. For active play or water play, cross Fifth by a safe route to the separate playground and seasonal spray park.

The memorial lights are embedded in the lawn and are easiest to understand in low light, but the garden's steps, walls and unfamiliar approaches call for care after dark. The garden is also reservable, so an event can change normal access without changing the broader park schedule.

Pittsburgh Regional Transit serves Fifth Avenue and nearby Penn, Shady and Beechwood corridors. Pick a stop for the exact north- or south-side destination rather than relying on the broad park pin, and account for the Fifth Avenue crossing.
