Mellon Park

Ordinary City park areas are generally open 6:00 a.m.-11:00 p.m., although some facilities close at sunset. The 2026 spray-park season runs daily 10:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m. through mid-September, weather permitting; the tennis center, events, permits and arts-campus buildings keep separate schedules.

There is no single documented visitor lot for every park zone. Use legal curb parking near Fifth, Beechwood, Shady, Reynolds or Penn and read posted restrictions; tennis, field, concert and permitted-event traffic can fill the closest spaces.

Choose a side of Fifth before navigating. Use 6601 Fifth Avenue for the north-side playground and spray park, Fifth at Beechwood for the tennis center, or the exact Walled Garden pin south of Fifth for the historic garden and star memorial. Cross Fifth only at a safe marked route.

The current City facility inventory lists no indoor bathroom at the reservable Mellon Park Shelter or Walled Garden. The tennis center has showers and staffed amenities during its own hours, but do not assume those facilities are available to an outdoor park visitor; plan a confirmed restroom before arrival.

The gardens, playground, spray park, courts, fields and ordinary outdoor park use are free. Indoor tennis court time, lessons, shelter or garden permits, food and some programs cost separately; 2026 tennis rates vary by time and booking type.

The City describes spray parks as usable by visitors who use wheelchairs, and developed park zones have paved approaches. Fifth Avenue divides the park, while historic terraces, stairs, lawn grades and separate entrances make routes unequal; choose the exact destination and inspect the final crossing and surface.

Dogs must remain leashed in ordinary park areas and are not allowed in playgrounds or courts. Keep pets out of the active spray area, planted beds, permitted event footprints and staffed indoor facilities unless the operator explicitly allows them.

For warm-weather play, pair the north-side playground with the adjacent spray park and bring dry clothes; the reservable shelter has three picnic tables and a grill but no indoor bathroom. The Walled Garden is a quieter public-art and garden stop across Fifth, not a play area.

Pittsburgh Regional Transit serves Fifth Avenue and nearby Penn, Shady and Beechwood corridors. Pick a stop for the exact north- or south-side destination rather than relying on the broad park pin, and account for the Fifth Avenue crossing.

The park is split by a busy avenue and its facilities do not share one schedule. The spray park is weather-dependent, the tennis center recommends direct reservations, the Walled Garden can be permitted for events, and the City schedules summer concerts on the Mellon Park lawn; verify the exact facility or event before leaving.

Check Pittsburgh weather, air quality, river levels and operator alerts. Steep trails, pools, spray parks, fountains, docks and events can close independently.
