Belle Isle Park

Michigan DNR's statewide day-use rule lists 8:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m., while Belle Isle Conservancy currently posts 5:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m. for the grounds. Because the official sources conflict, confirm posted entrance hours before an early visit; staffed attractions keep shorter schedules.

Parking is distributed across the island. A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for motor vehicles, while pedestrians, bicycles and public-transit riders enter without one. Route to the exact attraction before crossing the bridge.

The MacArthur Bridge is the only road entrance. Choose the Aquarium/Conservatory complex, Nature Center, beach, Dossin museum, fountain or Kids Row before crossing because the island is nearly three miles long.

Restrooms and seasonal portable facilities are distributed around the island rather than available at every stop. Belle Isle Conservancy cautions that some bathrooms have limited accessibility, so confirm the nearest facility for a mobility-specific visit.

Park entry on foot, bicycle or transit is free. Motor vehicles require a Recreation Passport. Aquarium and conservatory admission are free; Dossin Museum, Giant Slide, rentals, golf and reservations have separate fees.

Accessible parking and developed routes exist at selected attractions, but the island is large and garden, green-space, picnic and some bathroom routes have documented limitations. Current construction can also change circulation.

Leashed pets are allowed in ordinary outdoor areas under DNR rules but are restricted from park buildings, toilet buildings, designated swim beaches, endangered-species habitat and posted areas; service animals are exempt from building restrictions.

Aquarium, conservatory, Nature Center, beach, Kids Row playground and Giant Slide can fill a day; verify each attraction's independent schedule and do not plan to cover the island from one parking space.

DDOT Route 12 Conant serves the island approximately hourly and stops at the Aquarium/Conservatory complex. Confirm the current weekday or Sunday schedule and the final walk to other attractions.

The Scott Fountain plaza, adjacent sidewalk and Fountain Drive are closed through 2026, with reopening planned for spring 2027. The Aquarium remains open during renovation, and capacity controls can temporarily stop vehicle entry on busy summer afternoons.

Check Detroit weather, air quality, river conditions and operator alerts. Heat, snow, ice, storms, high water and seasonal operations can close paths or facilities independently.
