Theodore Roosevelt Island

The island is open daily 6 a.m.-10 p.m. Weather, flooding, maintenance, and parkway conditions can close the parking area, bridge, boardwalk, or trails.

The free lot has more than 100 marked standard and accessible spaces but regularly fills on pleasant weekends. Parking outside marked spaces is prohibited.

The parking lot is accessible only from northbound George Washington Memorial Parkway. Cross the wide footbridge from the lot; there is no vehicle access onto the island.

A comfort station and drinking fountains are on the south end along Woods Trail, about one-third mile from Memorial Plaza. Do not expect a restroom at the parking lot or memorial itself.

Island access and parking are free.

The footbridge is firm and wide, but island trails are gravel, dirt, roots, and boardwalk. Memorial Plaza is about a quarter-mile uphill, with grades up to roughly 12 percent and ramp access at the plaza.

Leashed dogs are allowed on trails but not on ranger-led programs. Use a leash no longer than six feet, carry waste out, and keep pets away from wildlife and marsh water.

The short bridge and memorial can work for families, while the full swamp loop adds roots, mud, water edges, and an unrailed boardwalk. Choose the route based on conditions.

The island has no direct Metro entrance. Rosslyn is the practical nearby station, followed by a walk and regional trail connection; verify construction and crossing conditions.

Bicycles must remain at the rack near the entrance and are not allowed on island trails. The Swamp Trail can flood or become muddy, so check conditions after rain or high water.

Bring water and a backup snack unless a currently open concession is confirmed near the exact destination. Food availability, vending, and event vendors are not consistent across this large public place.
