South Mountain Park and Preserve

Parking and entrances are open 5:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m.; trails are open 5:00 a.m.-11:00 p.m. The visitor center is open Thursday-Sunday 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

Choose the main Central Avenue entrance, Pima Canyon, Mormon, Beverly Canyon, 19th Avenue, or another official trailhead. Lots and gates close before trails, so a late return can leave a vehicle locked in.

Dobbins Lookout is reachable by Summit Road or Holbert Trail. Silent Sunday closes Summit Road to motor vehicles every fourth Sunday all day and on other Sundays 5:00-10:00 a.m.

Restrooms and water are concentrated at the visitor center and major trailheads; remote routes and ridgelines have none. Never assume a fountain is operational.

Park, roads, trails, lookouts, and visitor center are free. Programs, reservations, tours, concessions, and external transportation may charge.

Dobbins can be reached by road when open, and developed facilities offer accessible options; most mountain trails are rocky, steep, exposed, and unsuitable for mobility devices.

Leashed dogs are allowed on many trails under posted rules, but heat and rock can injure paws quickly. Trail-specific closures and emergency restrictions apply.

Scenic driving, visitor-center exhibits, short lower trails, picnics, and Dobbins views can suit families. Summit routes require realistic ability, water, and turnaround planning.

A private vehicle or rideshare is most practical, but pickup inside gated areas can be unreliable. Cyclists share narrow scenic roads with vehicles except during Silent Sunday closures.

Extreme Heat Warnings trigger 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. restrictions on Holbert, Mormon, Hau'pal Loop, and National Trail access from Pima Canyon. Check heat alerts, Summit Road closures, Silent Sunday, and gate times before leaving.

Check Phoenix's hourly temperature and heat index, National Weather Service Extreme Heat Warnings, trail restrictions, air quality, lightning, monsoon storms, flash-flood risk, and current park notices. Exposed rock, metal, pavement, play equipment, and pet paws can reach dangerous temperatures long before afternoon.
