Richmond National Battlefield Park

Battlefield grounds and trails are open daily sunrise to sunset. Chimborazo and Cold Harbor visitor centers are open Wednesday-Sunday 9:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; Fort Harrison Visitor Center is closed for 2026.

Each battlefield has its own small lot and GPS address. Start at Chimborazo or Cold Harbor for staffed orientation and never navigate only to the park's mailing address for a full driving tour.

Choose one or two units or reserve a full day for the official twelve-site, roughly 80-mile route. Chimborazo is the staffed starting point inside Richmond; Cold Harbor serves the eastern battlefields.

Dependable restrooms are concentrated at open visitor centers. Remote battlefield trails may have no water or facilities, especially while Fort Harrison's building is closed.

Park grounds, trails, museums and orientation films are free. Special programs, private tours and nearby partner attractions may charge separately.

Visitor centers and selected short battlefield trails have accessible routes, while fields and forest trails use uneven natural surfaces. Request current accommodation details for a specific unit.

Leashed pets are allowed on many grounds but not inside park buildings. They may not be left unattended; protect them from ticks, heat and historic-resource areas.

Short trails and visitor-center exhibits can support a focused family visit. The full driving tour is long, and battlefields prohibit ordinary recreational games to preserve commemorative landscapes.

The dispersed units cannot be visited practically by public transit as one trip. A vehicle, offline map and sufficient fuel are necessary for the multi-county route.

Fort Harrison Visitor Center is closed throughout 2026, though verify grounds access separately. Chimborazo and Cold Harbor are closed Monday-Tuesday and all park buildings close Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.
