Texas Beach

Texas Beach is a named shoreline destination at James River Park System; check water status, lifeguard coverage, wind and posted beach rules before entering.

Parking is distributed among small lots at Belle Isle/Tredegar, Pony Pasture, Reedy Creek, Huguenot Flatwater and other trailheads. Lots fill early on warm weekends; never park on grass or block neighborhood streets.

The shoreline remains a sunrise-to-sunset park destination, but the direct pedestrian bridge is closed. Use the signed North Bank Trail alternate route and allow substantially more walking time.

Restrooms are available at selected developed access points but not every trailhead. Bring water and verify the chosen site rather than assuming facilities follow the entire river trail.

Ordinary park, trail, island and river access is free. Programs, rentals, permits and nearby commercial parking may cost separately.

The Floodwall and selected paved riverfront approaches provide the firmest routes. Belle Isle, rocks, rapids and natural trails include steep, uneven or wet surfaces.

Richmond's current published city-park rules do not list James River Park System among the parks where dogs are allowed. Bring only a qualified service animal unless current signs or the park office state otherwise.

Belle Isle's loop, river overlooks and easier paved approaches can work for families, but the James has powerful currents and no substitute for close adult supervision and properly fitted life jackets.

The Texas Beach pedestrian bridge is closed while repairs continue toward a December 2026 target; the alternate approach follows the North Bank Trail. At 5 feet and above, river users should wear or carry a PFD on watercraft; at 9 feet and above, only expert paddlers should use the river recreationally.

GRTC routes and bike-share stations serve portions of the downtown riverfront. Outlying access points such as Pony Pasture and Huguenot Flatwater require separate trip planning.
