Shields Lake

Shields Lake is a distinct mapped destination within Byrd Park; navigate to this point instead of the general park pin and check posted conditions on arrival.

Use the lot or legal roadside spaces nearest Fountain Lake, Shields Lake picnic shelters, Dogwood Dell or Barker Field. The park spans both sides of major roads and event traffic can change access.

Open daily from sunrise to sunset, except the self-lighted tennis complex may operate later. Concessions, pedal boats, events and facilities use seasonal schedules.

Summer concessions at Fountain Lake include restrooms; additional facilities serve Dogwood Dell and developed areas. Individual buildings can close seasonally or for events.

General park, paths, playground, courts and dog park access is free. Pedal boats, concessions, reservations and programmed activities may charge; fishing requires a Virginia license.

Sidewalks connect the three-lake area and developed recreation features. Grass slopes, older paths and event layouts vary, so use the closest accessible parking.

Dogs are allowed on leash in Byrd Park, with off-leash use confined to Barker Field Dog Park. Keep dogs away from wildlife and never feed waterfowl.

The playground, summer boats, lakes and free Dogwood Dell programming support a full family visit. Children need close supervision beside all three lakes and road crossings.
