Great Falls Park

The park is open daily from 7 a.m. until 30 minutes after sunset and is closed December 25. The Visitor Center is currently open 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; courtyard restrooms, portable toilets, snack bar, and programs use separate schedules.

Parking is inside the entrance station and routinely backs up on pleasant weekends, holidays, and high-water viewing days. Arrive near opening or choose a quieter weekday; never queue or park outside designated areas.

Navigate to the Virginia entrance at 9200 Old Dominion Drive, not the Maryland-side C&O Canal overlook. The three primary overlooks are a five- to ten-minute walk from the main parking and Visitor Center area.

Courtyard bathrooms are currently open 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. A separate restroom is out of order, with portable toilets available from 7 a.m. until dark; recheck the current facilities notice before leaving.

A standard seven-day entrance pass currently costs $10-$20 depending on entry type, and the annual park pass is $35. The park is cashless; verify current NPS fees and pass acceptance before arriving.

Routes near the Visitor Center, picnic area, and overlooks are mostly flat gravel. Overlooks 2 and 3 have ramped access; Overlook 1 requires negotiating rocky terrain and is not accessible to wheelchairs.

Leashed pets are welcome on trails, in parking areas, at overlooks, and in picnic areas. Use a physical leash no longer than six feet; pets may not enter the river, Visitor Center, restrooms, or ranger programs except service animals.

The overlooks are close to parking, but cliffs, fast water, and unprotected rocky edges demand constant supervision. Choose Overlooks 2 or 3 for the easiest family route and keep children beside an adult.

There is no practical direct public transit to the park entrance. Rideshare pickup can be unreliable because cellular service is limited, so arrange the return before arrival.

Swimming, wading, and rock hopping are prohibited and deadly currents continue below apparently calm water. Cell service is limited; download the map, check flood and weather alerts, carry water, and wear closed-toe shoes.

Bring water and a backup snack unless a currently open concession is confirmed near the exact destination. Food availability, vending, and event vendors are not consistent across this large public place.
