Gravelly Point

The Gravelly Point parking lot and boat ramp are open daily 6 a.m.-10 p.m. Closures can occur for parkway incidents, flooding, construction, security needs, or special operations.

Use designated marked spaces only. The lot frequently fills during pleasant weekends and aviation events; weekday recreational parking is limited to six hours, and overnight parking is prohibited.

Vehicle access is only from the northbound George Washington Memorial Parkway. Southbound drivers must continue to a legal turnaround; do not stop or reverse on the parkway shoulder.

A public restroom serves Gravelly Point, but temporary closure or maintenance is possible. There is no staffed visitor center or dependable drinking-water service.

Park, plane-spotting lawn, picnic area, trail, lot, and boat-ramp access are free. Commercial services and activities outside the park may charge.

The main lawn, picnic area, and paved Mount Vernon Trail connection are relatively level, but grass, curb transitions, crowding, noise, and the boat-ramp edge vary.

Pets must remain on a physical leash no longer than six feet. Remove waste, keep animals controlled around crowds and bicycles, and do not allow pets to enter the Potomac from parkway land.

The dramatic aircraft views are memorable, but the sound is extremely loud and sudden. Bring hearing protection for young or noise-sensitive visitors and supervise children near the river, road, trail, and boat ramp.

There is no direct Metro entrance. The Mount Vernon Trail is the practical car-free route from nearby Arlington and Washington connections; plan the return before dark.

Aircraft direction and closeness depend on wind and airport operations. Never use drones, lasers, kites, or objects that could interfere with aviation, and keep the Mount Vernon Trail clear while watching planes.

Bring water and a backup snack unless a currently open concession is confirmed near the exact destination. Food availability, vending, and event vendors are not consistent across this large public place.
