Lake Wheeler Park

Route to 6404 Lake Wheeler Road and follow signs for your activity. The upper Waterfront Center lot serves shelters, the accessible fishing dock, and overlook; additional accessible spaces sit down the road toward the boat ramps. Trailer users should follow launch-area circulation rather than occupying ordinary visitor spaces.

Use the signed main entrance at 6404 Lake Wheeler Road. Continue toward the Waterfront Center for the office, restrooms, overlook, shelters, and accessible fishing dock, or follow boat-ramp signs for launching. Check the current lake alert before towing a boat because low water can change launch availability.

Yes. Restrooms with accessible features are at the Waterfront Center, beside the deck and veranda overlooking the lake. Trail and shoreline areas do not have continuous facilities, so use the Waterfront Center before heading onto a natural trail or out on the water.

Hours change seasonally: 8 a.m.-6 p.m. in December-January; 7 a.m.-6 p.m. in November and February; 7 a.m.-7 p.m. in October and March; 7 a.m.-8 p.m. in September and April; and 6 a.m.-8 p.m. May-August. Boats must leave the water 30 minutes before sunset or closing.

General park entry and fishing access are free, although anglers need a current North Carolina fishing license. Personal boat launches cost $5 per day for Raleigh residents, $7 for nonresidents, or $3 for ages 55 and older; annual passes are available. Rentals, programs, shelters, and courts may charge separately.

The upper lot has four accessible spaces, including spaces near Magnolia Shelter and the sidewalk to the accessible fishing dock. Two more accessible spaces are near the boat-ramp road. A ramp reaches the Waterfront Center, accessible restrooms, deck, and veranda; natural trails remain uneven with roots, rocks, and changing surfaces.

Yes. Motorized and nonmotorized boats may launch with a daily or annual pass, but personal watercraft such as Jet Skis are prohibited. Travel counter-clockwise, observe the 40 mph limit and no-wake markers, and note lake-wide no-wake hours Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday until 11 a.m.

Fish from the two designated piers or the shoreline of Simpkins Pond; bank fishing along the main Lake Wheeler shoreline is prohibited. No separate City fishing permit fee is charged, but every angler needs a current North Carolina fishing license. A rod-and-reel loaner program may be available at the office.

Yes. The woodchip-surface playground serves ages 2-12 and includes swings intended for ages 5 and older. It is near other developed park amenities, but shade and restroom distance vary; use the park map and Waterfront Center as the reliable restroom reference point.

No. Swimming and wading are prohibited because Lake Wheeler is an active drinking-water reservoir. Waterskiing and tubing from permitted boats may occur, but entering the water to swim is not allowed, including from a private boat.
