Horseshoe Farm Nature Preserve

Navigate to 2900 Horseshoe Farm Road and use only the designated permeable-pavement parking spaces. The parking area provides dog-waste bags and access toward the restroom, meadow, farmhouse, picnic shelter, natural-surface loops, and paved Neuse River Greenway connector.

Begin at the signed preserve parking area and restroom building. From there, choose the paved connector for the Neuse River Greenway, the roughly 0.9-mile Meadow Loop for an open-space circuit, or the approximately 0.6-mile River Walk for floodplain woods and river access. Photograph the posted map before leaving the developed area.

Yes. A composting restroom is located near the developed entrance and greenway connector. It was designed to function without connecting the preserve to public utilities. Use it before beginning the River Walk or a longer greenway trip because there are no additional facilities on the natural loops.

The preserve opens daily at 7 a.m. Monthly closing times are 6 p.m. January, 6:30 February, 7 March, 8 April, 8:30 May, 9 June-July, 8:30 August, 8 September, 7 October, and 5:30 November-December. Leave enough daylight for the unlit natural-surface return.

Yes. General entry, parking, trails, greenway access, picnic use when available, and self-guided wildlife observation are free. Some scheduled nature programs may require RecLink registration and a fee, but there is no admission gate or routine trail charge.

The developed area includes permeable parking, a composting restroom, an ADA-accessible picnic table, and a paved connector to the Neuse River Greenway. The Meadow Loop and River Walk are natural surface and may be soft, uneven, wet, or flooded. The paved greenway connection is the most predictable rolling route.

Choose the approximately 0.9-mile Meadow Loop for open views along the wood line and lower meadow. Choose the roughly 0.6-mile River Walk for bottomland hardwood floodplain, natural levees, wetlands, and the Neuse River. Both are natural surface; combine them only when conditions and daylight support a longer walk.

Yes. A paved connector runs from the preserve's restroom building to the Neuse River section of Raleigh's greenway. This makes Horseshoe Farm a useful trail access and rest stop, but it does not mean the preserve's Meadow and River Walk loops allow bicycles; those natural paths follow separate rules.

It can. The River Walk enters bottomland hardwood floodplain within a Neuse River bend, so high water and recent storms can leave natural surfaces muddy, submerged, or impassable. Never cross posted closures or moving water; use the meadow or paved greenway connector when river conditions make the lower route unsafe.

Yes, on leash at all times. Stay on trails, pick up waste, and use the bags supplied near parking. The leash rule protects bottomland wildlife, native plants, nesting birds, other visitors, and pets themselves in meadow and floodplain habitat.

Bicycles may use the paved connector and Neuse River Greenway but are not allowed on the preserve's natural-surface trails. Dismount rather than taking a bike onto the Meadow Loop or River Walk. This protects soft soil, vegetation, and people using the narrow nature paths.

Bring your own drinking water. The preserve's sustainable design avoids a public-utility connection and uses a composting restroom; historical state environmental-education guidance specifically notes that running water is not available. Carry enough for the meadow, river, or greenway distance you plan.

Yes. Open meadow, wetlands, bottomland forest, river edge, and protected native vegetation support a broad mix of resident and migratory birds. Wake Audubon reports more than 140 documented species. Walk quietly, remain on trail, avoid recorded-call disturbance, and bring binoculars and seasonal insect protection.

The renovated farmhouse supports nature education and interpretive use rather than daily drop-in museum hours. The City currently lists public opening on the second Sunday of each month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Treat that schedule as program-dependent and confirm before making the building the purpose of your trip.
