Koko Crater Railway Trail

Use the trail only during daylight and obey posted Koko Head District Park closure hours. Heat, maintenance, wildfire risk and severe weather can close access independently.

Free parking is shared with Koko Head District Park athletics. From the lot, walk past the baseball fields toward the obvious railway alignment; do not block sports or emergency access.

Navigate to Koko Head District Park rather than the crater rim. The trailhead sits beyond the playing fields, and the summit route follows the steep former railway straight uphill.

Use district-park restrooms before walking to the trailhead. There are no toilets, water fountains or staffed services on the railway climb or summit.

Trail and ordinary district-park parking are free. Tours, transportation and nearby commercial services cost separately.

This is not an accessible route: steep uneven railway ties, gaps, a bridge or rough bypass, intense sun and more than a thousand steps demand strong mobility and conditioning.

Do not bring a dog unless current posted rules allow it and the animal is conditioned for hot, abrasive ties; there is no water or shade. Heat injury and paw burns are serious risks.

This is inappropriate for strollers and many young children. Families should honestly assess heat tolerance, balance, exposure and the ability to descend the same steep route.

TheBus serves the Hawaii Kai area, but the final walk to the district park and trailhead adds distance. Check the return schedule before beginning a slow climb.

There is virtually no shade or water, and rescues are common enough to take preparation seriously. Start near sunrise, carry more water than expected and turn around before heat or fatigue compromises the descent.

Check current Oahu weather, ocean conditions and operator alerts. Extreme UV, heat, heavy rain, flash flooding, high surf, wind, currents, jellyfish and water-quality notices can close trails, beaches, boats or facilities independently.
