First Lookout

First Lookout is a distinct mapped destination within Diamond Head State Monument; navigate to this point instead of the general park pin and check posted conditions on arrival.

Non-Hawaii residents must reserve parking in advance. Parking is limited inside the crater and sold in timed blocks; arriving without the correct reservation can mean turning around.

Open daily from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; last entrance to hike is 4:00 p.m. Entry is controlled by reservation windows and the monument can close for weather or safety work. First Lookout may keep shorter, reserved, staffed, event-dependent, ocean-dependent or daylight-only hours; verify the current feature status before relying on parent hours.

Restrooms and water are available near the crater trailhead and parking area, not along the upper trail. Use them before beginning the climb.

Nonresident admission is $5 per person and nonresident vehicle parking is $10, plus applicable reservation fees. Hawaii residents enter and park free with valid ID, subject to availability.

The visitor area is more accessible than the summit route. The hike is steep and exposed with switchbacks, uneven pavement, long stairs, a tunnel and narrow military structures; the summit is not wheelchair accessible.

Pets are not permitted on the summit trail. Qualified service animals are governed by applicable access rules, but the physical route remains steep and constrained.

Older children comfortable with heat, heights, tunnels and stairs may enjoy the route. Carry water, pace the ascent and do not bring a stroller expecting summit access.

TheBus can reach nearby Diamond Head Road stops, followed by a substantial uphill walk through the vehicle tunnel. Confirm pedestrian tunnel access and return timing before relying on transit.
