Dumbarton Oaks Park

Enter from Lovers' Lane near R Street or from the Rock Creek trail network; do not confuse the free park with the separately operated paid garden.

Use designated lots and marked spaces only. Parking is distributed and can fill near the Nature Center, picnic areas, trailheads, and events; roadside parking outside marked areas is prohibited.

The park is free during daylight hours. Expect mud, roots, stream crossings, erosion work, and steep connectors; the adjacent Dumbarton Oaks Garden has separate admission.

There are no dependable restrooms in the natural park. Use facilities before entering the valley.

General park, trail, Nature Center, and Peirce Mill access is free. Horseback riding, permits, reservations, and some partner programs may charge.

The Nature Center and selected developed areas have accessible routes, while many forest trails include hills, roots, rocks, creek crossings, and mud. Choose a destination-specific route.

Dogs must remain leashed. Bring waste bags, protect wildlife, and do not let pets enter Rock Creek or interfere with horses and trail users.

The Nature Center, planetarium programs, Peirce Mill, picnic areas, and shorter trails are strong family options. Match distance and terrain to the group before leaving the developed area.
