Meridian Hill Park (Malcolm X Park)

May-October hours are 5 a.m.-midnight; November-April hours are 5 a.m.-9 p.m. Construction or restoration work can restrict individual lawns, paths, sculpture, or fountain areas.

There is no large park lot. Use legal neighborhood street parking, bus, bikeshare, or a nearby Metro approach and respect residential restrictions.

Upper entrances are along 16th Street near Euclid Street; the lower park meets 15th Street and Florida Avenue. Pick the entrance based on the cascade, upper lawn, or an accessible lower approach.

Do not plan around a dependable public restroom inside the park. Use a verified nearby facility before arriving, especially for a longer family visit or event.

General park access is free. Organized events, commercial activity, and some gatherings require permits.

A newer accessible route serves the lower park near 16th Street and Florida Avenue. The historic terraces, stairs, grades, and construction zones still require destination-specific planning.

Dogs must remain leashed and under control. Keep pets out of fountain basins, planted areas, events, and restoration zones and remove waste.

Lawns, sculpture, views, and the cascade make a rewarding short visit. Closely supervise children around stairs, walls, streets, and water; swimming and wading are prohibited.

Frequent buses serve 16th Street, and Columbia Heights and U Street Metro stations are walkable from different sides. Choose the approach that avoids an unnecessary climb.

A major rehabilitation has reopened key lower-park features, but testing, temporary fencing, and continuing landscape work may affect access. Check the latest NPS conditions before visiting for the cascade specifically.

Bring water and a backup snack unless a currently open concession is confirmed near the exact destination. Food availability, vending, and event vendors are not consistent across this large public place.
