Redwood Regional Park

Redwood Gate on Redwood Road serves Canyon Meadow and developed picnic areas. Skyline Gate, Big Bear, MacDonald, and other staging areas serve different ridge and trail routes. Choose a named trailhead before navigating.

Main gate hours begin at 8:00 a.m. and close at 6:00 p.m. November-February, 7:00 p.m. in March and October, and 8:00 p.m. April-September. Park curfew is 10:00 p.m.-5:00 a.m.

Redwood Gate charges $5 per vehicle when its kiosk is staffed on weekends and major holidays from April through October. The gate accepts cash only. Fees and collection at other entrances differ.

Canyon Meadow and Skyline Gate staging areas and some picnic sites are accessible to wheelchair users. Trail surfaces, grades, mud, and route continuity vary; consult the district accessibility information before selecting a route.

The main redwood forest lies along the canyon drainage and surrounding trails below the ridges. Use the official map from Redwood Gate or Skyline Gate and expect natural surfaces, elevation changes, and limited wayfinding without a downloaded map.

Dogs are allowed under East Bay Regional Park District rules, with leash requirements and posted restrictions varying by developed area, trail, and resource protection zone. Carry a leash and read signs at the chosen entrance.

Yes. Old Church, Owl, and other developed picnic areas can be reserved. Some sites require a paved walk from parking, and parking fees may apply at Redwood Gate during the collection season.

Cell service is weak or absent in much of the park. Download maps before arrival, share your route, and do not rely on live navigation. Limited public Wi-Fi is available at the park office for emergencies.

Use Redwood Gate and Canyon Meadow for the main redwood-canyon experience, or choose Skyline Gate and another named staging area for ridge trails. Only Redwood Gate charges the seasonal staffed-kiosk fee, currently $5 on weekends and major holidays April-October, and payment is cash only.

Restrooms and toilets are concentrated at developed staging and picnic areas rather than along most trails. Owl picnic area has nearby flush toilets, Old Church has chemical toilets, and Quail's bathrooms are not close.

The redwood forest and evergreen canyon provide extensive natural shade, while ridges, chaparral, and open picnic glades can be exposed. Trail's End group campsite has a shelter, but it is a seasonal reservable hike-in facility rather than general day-use refuge; picnic areas have varying tree cover and facilities. During high wind, lightning, wildfire conditions, or falling-branch risk, leave the forest and use a substantial building or vehicle rather than sheltering beneath large trees.

A children's play structure is about one-quarter mile down Stream Trail from the Canyon Meadow staging area. This requires a walk rather than curbside arrival, so bring what children need from the car and use Canyon Meadow as the destination instead of a generic park pin. The Park District does not publish age or ability ranges for the structure; nearby picnic sites and staging areas vary in accessibility, and trail conditions can change after storms.

No designated swimming facility or splash pad is located in Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park, and the park map prohibits wading or swimming in undesignated areas. Redwood Creek is protected trout habitat and fishing is also prohibited. Keep people and pets on the trail and out of the creek. The Park District identifies Roberts Regional Recreation Area, several miles farther along Skyline Boulevard, as the nearby park with a seasonal swimming pool; verify that facility's schedule and fees separately.

Yes. East Bay Regional Park District identifies AC Transit service for Roberts Regional Recreation Area and Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park; the current park brochure marks an AC Transit stop near the Trudeau parking area on Skyline Boulevard. Confirm the current route in the 511 planner because route numbers and stops can change, and note that Canyon Meadow, Redwood Gate, Skyline Gate, and other trailheads are widely separated and may require long, hilly walks.

Use Redwood Gate and Canyon Meadow for the most direct family introduction to the redwood canyon: Stream Trail begins there, the play structure is about one-quarter mile down the trail, and Historical Landmark 970 is near the fishway interpretive site. Skyline Gate is a separate ridge-top start for East Ridge and West Ridge routes. Download the map before arrival because cellular service is limited and the staging areas do not function as one connected parking lot.
