Lake Merritt

Use Lakeside Park and Bellevue Avenue for the gardens, boating center, Sailboat House, bandstand, nature center, and nearby family attractions. For a shoreline walk, choose the closest legal access point to the side of the lake you want to explore.

Inside Lakeside Park on Bellevue Avenue, parking operates 7:30 a.m. to dusk. Current posted rates are $3 per two hours or $12 all day on weekdays and $5 all day on weekends and holidays; event rates can differ.

A paved multi-use shoreline route circles the lagoon and connects parks, gardens, plazas, docks, and neighborhood access points. Expect busy shared-use sections, street crossings, event detours, and occasional maintenance work.

Major destinations include the Gardens at Lake Merritt, Japanese garden and koi pond, Edoff Memorial Bandstand, Rotary Nature Center, boating center, Sailboat House, Junior Center of Art and Science, wildlife sanctuary, and the Necklace of Lights.

The shoreline, general park spaces, paths, lawns, wildlife viewing, and gardens are generally free. Parking, boat rentals or private launches, Children's Fairyland, reservations, and some programs charge separately.

The Sailboat House entrance is wheelchair accessible, and much of the shoreline and garden area uses paved routes. Conditions and grades vary around the full lake, so select the destination and parking area before relying on one continuous accessible route.

Grilling is allowed only in specifically designated areas and hours. Stationary charcoal pits are available near the bandstand, boating center, and selected Bellevue areas; other shoreline sections allow only limited-size portable non-charcoal grills.

Only non-motorized boats may launch through the boating center during rental hours, with a launch fee and required life jacket. Boats must stay out of the bird sanctuary, remain 50 feet from shore, and never beach along the lake.

Restroom access is concentrated at developed Lakeside Park facilities and independently operated attractions rather than available continuously around the full lake loop. Identify a staffed destination such as the Garden Center, boating area, or Children's Fairyland before a long outing.

Oakland requires dogs to remain leashed in ordinary park areas unless signage identifies an authorized off-leash space. Pets are prohibited on Lake Merritt rental or private-launch boats, and independently operated attractions set their own animal rules.

Children's Fairyland is a separate ticketed 10-acre attraction, while the Junior Center of Art and Science offers its own programs. General park access does not include admission or guarantee operating hours for either destination.

Mature trees shade portions of Lakeside Park, the gardens, picnic knolls, and shoreline paths, but many lawns, docks, bridges, playground approaches, and the open east and south shoreline are exposed. Lake Merritt Sailboat House is an indoor recreation and rental facility with its own hours, while the Municipal Boathouse, Fairyland, and other buildings are separately operated. During lightning, high wind, poor air quality, or dangerous heat, use a confirmed-open substantial building or enclosed vehicle rather than trees or a waterfront structure.

Do not swim or wade in Lake Merritt. Oakland's master plan records that swimming and other water-contact sports are banned; the City's current lake programming is boating and sailing with designated equipment and supervision. The small beach at Lakeside Park is a shoreline feature, not a swimming beach. Splash Pad Park is a separately named nearby park and should not be confused with a guaranteed operating spray feature; use an Oakland public pool listing for planned swimming.

Lake Merritt BART is best for the south and museum side, while 19th Street BART is useful for the northwest lakefront. AC Transit Lines 12 and 22 serve Grand Avenue and Lakeshore Avenue around the north and east sides. Enter the pergola, Children's Fairyland, museum, boating center, or amphitheater specifically and check event detours before traveling.
