Washington Park

The outdoor park is open 5:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m. and closes to vehicles at 10:00 p.m.; every garden, zoo, museum, visitor center, shuttle, and concession keeps its own schedule.

Parking is limited and pay-by-plate daily 9:30 a.m.-8:00 p.m., normally $2.40 per hour up to $9.60, with higher event rates possible. Route to the exact attraction lot rather than one park pin.

MAX Red and Blue lines stop at Washington Park Station near the zoo. A free seasonal shuttle links major attractions and is usually easier than moving a car between full lots.

Restrooms are available at major developed destinations, including park attractions and selected trail nodes, but hours vary and wooded routes do not have continuous facilities.

The park, Rose Test Garden, memorials, playground, arboretum trails, and shuttle are free. Zoo, Japanese Garden, World Forestry Center exhibits, parking, food, and programs charge separately.

The park lists accessible play, restrooms, parking, and paved routes; MAX and the seasonal shuttle are accessible. Hills, stairs, natural trails, and attraction entrances vary substantially.

Leashed dogs may use ordinary park areas and trails under posted rules, but the zoo, Japanese Garden, playground, buildings, gardens, and events have separate restrictions.

The zoo, playground, arboretum, rose garden, memorial walks, and shuttle create many family options. Plan one or two zones rather than trying to walk the entire hilly park.

MAX is the most dependable car-free arrival. TriMet buses, biking, walking, rideshare, the seasonal park shuttle, and the 2026 Forest and Washington Park Express add options.

Warm weekends create heavy congestion. Check attraction hours, shuttle season, weather closures, reservoir construction, and event parking before leaving; never assume the park's hours apply to a ticketed attraction.

Check Portland's hourly rain and temperature, heat or smoke advisories, wind, lightning, ice, river conditions, trail closures, and current park notices. Forested trails can remain muddy or hazardous after storms, while open lawns, summits, fountains, and riverfront areas have different exposure.
