Forest Park

The natural area is open 5:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m. Trail hazards, storms, landslides, fallen trees, fire conditions, and maintenance can close individual access points at any time.

Parking is free but highly variable: many trailheads have ten or fewer spaces, while Lower Macleay, Pittock/Wildwood, Lower Saltzman, and Germantown have larger areas. Never block neighbors or road shoulders.

Choose a named trailhead and route before traveling; Forest Park is too large for a single useful arrival point. Lower Macleay is the simplest start for Balch Creek and Stone House.

Facilities are limited and concentrated at a few developed trailheads or adjacent destinations. Carry water and do not assume a restroom or fountain will be open at a rustic access point.

Trails and parking are free. Pittock Mansion admission, guided programs, transportation, equipment, food, and nearby attractions cost separately.

ADA parking exists at Lower Macleay and Wildwood/Pittock trailheads. Trail surface, grade, roots, mud, bridges, and washouts vary; use the official pocket guide for accessible-route details.

Dogs must remain leashed everywhere. Off-leash dogs, fires, drones, camping, fireworks, hunting, fishing, and motorized vehicles are prohibited.

Lower Macleay to Stone House can work for trail-ready families, while the full Wildwood Trail is a serious undertaking. Expect mud, roots, cyclists or horses on designated routes, and few facilities.

TriMet lines 26, 15, and 77 reach Lower Macleay-area access; Line 16 serves northern trailheads. The free summer 2026 Express Shuttle also serves selected Forest Park stops.

Download the map before entering and check Portland's Trail Closures and Delays page. The Ridge Trail parking area is closed indefinitely and the Wildwood bridge at mile 15.2 has a stepped bypass.

Check Portland's hourly rain and temperature, heat or smoke advisories, wind, lightning, ice, river conditions, trail closures, and current park notices. Forested trails can remain muddy or hazardous after storms, while open lawns, summits, fountains, and riverfront areas have different exposure.
