The Hills and Slide Hill

The Hills include Outlook, Discovery, Grassy, and Slide Hill. Slide Hill has long slides and climbing routes; the entire South Island zone closes at dusk.

Visitors cannot drive onto the island. Use transit to the ferry; paid garages are available in Lower Manhattan, but ferry schedules make transit the better option.

Open daily year-round. Current hours are 7 AM-10 PM Sunday-Thursday and 7 AM-11 PM Friday-Saturday; South Island Park closes at dusk.

Accessible restrooms are in Building 110 near Soissons Landing and in trailers at Yankee Pier, Liggett Terrace on weekends, and South Battery.

Island entry is free, but ferry fares may apply. Trust-operated ferries are free for select riders and during designated morning trips; rentals, food, and attractions charge separately.

Ferries and grounds are wheelchair accessible, though not every historic building is. A seasonal accessible tram runs approximately every 30 minutes between ferry landings.

Pets are generally not permitted except service animals and dogs participating in specifically announced programs. Confirm current island rules before traveling.

Slide Hill, Hammock Grove, Play Lawns, fountains at Liggett Terrace, cycling, picnics, and open space make the island a high-value family day trip.

Use 1, R/W, 4/5, J/Z, or buses to Lower Manhattan and walk to the Battery Maritime Building. Brooklyn ferry service is seasonal.
