Cherry groves and mature park trees provide seasonal shade, and the historic Octagon Shelter is a covered landmark. The Cherry Blossom Welcome Center is an indoor event facility, but current permit information lists no weekday rentals and no weekend availability until 2027, so do not assume it will be open. The Oval, athletic fields, lake edges, playgrounds, and long path sections are exposed; use an open substantial building or vehicle during lightning or high wind.

The designated Branch Brook Park Dog Park is on Branch Brook Park Drive West near Heller Parkway. Dogs may be off leash only inside that marked facility; Essex County requires dogs to be leashed outside its off-leash areas. Bring current license and vaccination tags, limit each handler to two dogs, remove waste, and follow the posted age and conduct rules inside the enclosure.

No public swimming pool or splash pad is listed at Branch Brook Park. The park's streams, ponds, and 24-acre lake are scenic waterways and fishing habitat, not supervised swimming or wading areas. Paddle boating may be offered during a specifically announced County event, but that does not mean boats or water access are generally available; follow current event details and posted shoreline rules.

The park's signature landscape is its collection of more than 5,000 Japanese flowering cherry trees, concentrated through the northern and central sections near the Cherry Blossom Welcome Center. Nineteen distinct bridges cross the park's lakes, streams, and sinuous central waterway, creating the other major visual landmarks. For a first visit, use the Branch Brook Park light-rail stop and walk toward the welcome center; the park is nearly four miles long, so do not expect one viewpoint to cover the full historic landscape.
