Jockey's Ridge State Park

Use 300 West Carolista Drive for the visitor center, main dunes, kite flying, sandboarding, and hang gliding. Use 330 West Soundside Road for the Roanoke Sound beach, swimming, paddling, kiteboarding, and wetland trail. The two experiences have separate parking and hours.

The main access opens at 8 a.m. and closes at 6 p.m. January-February and November-December, 8 p.m. March-April, 9 p.m. May-September, and 7 p.m. in October. Soundside commonly closes at 5 p.m. Check posted gates before a sunset visit.

Park at the main visitor-center lot on West Carolista Drive for the tall dunes. Use the separate West Soundside Road lot only for the sound beach and wetland side. Lots can fill around summer sunsets and events, and cars must exit before gate closing.

The main experience is deep, shifting sand with no fixed traditional trail, little shade, and exposed wind. Sand can become dramatically hotter than the air. The Soundside route is about 0.75 mile through wetland habitat; bring water and allow extra time for sand walking.

Restrooms are available at the main visitor-center area during facility hours. Soundside facilities are more limited, so use the official map and plan around the shorter Soundside schedule when restrooms are essential.

The visitor center and developed main-access facilities provide accessible features, but deep shifting sand makes the dune itself difficult for standard mobility devices. Contact the park before visiting for current mobility assistance and the most practical viewing route.

Yes. Pets must remain attended on a leash no longer than 6 feet and cannot enter buildings. NC State Parks warns that sand may be as much as 30 degrees hotter than the air and sandspurs can injure paws, so paw protection and water are important.

A water-quality advisory is currently posted against swimming at Soundside Access because bacteria exceeded recreational standards. Check the live notice at the top of the official park page before entering the water; conditions and advisories can change after testing.

The visitor center and picnic shelters at Main Access provide the most dependable shade. Maritime thickets offer intermittent cover on lower nature-trail sections, but the ridge and dune top are fully exposed to sun, wind, lightning, and hot sand. Return to the visitor center or a vehicle before a storm; picnic shelters and trees are not safe lightning shelters.

NC State Parks does not list conventional playground equipment at either access. The main family play experience is the dune itself for kite flying, sand exploration, sunsets, ranger activities, and permitted concession lessons; Soundside offers seasonal water recreation when no advisory is active. Families can also pick up a self-guided Junior Ranger booklet at the visitor center. Sand can be dramatically hotter than the air, the ridge is fully exposed, and the current Soundside water-quality alert should be checked before any swimming plan.

A reservable picnic shelter is mapped beside the main-access parking and visitor-center area, providing the easiest shaded group option before entering the exposed dunes. Unreserved state-park shelters are generally free first come, first served; reserve through the NC State Parks system when exclusive use matters. A blanket sunset picnic on the ridge is possible, but everything must be carried across sand and packed out, with no dependable shade or wind protection.

The park has no splash pad, but normally offers free designated swimming at the separate Soundside Access on Roanoke Sound, 330 West Soundside Road. Do not route to the main dune visitor center for the beach. As of July 31, 2026, an active water-quality advisory warns against swimming at Soundside because bacteria exceed recreational standards. Check the official alert immediately before visiting and stay out until the advisory is lifted; paddling and wind sports may also require condition-specific judgment.

Dare County offers county transportation for residents and visitors, but it is demand-response service rather than a frequent walk-up beach bus. Contact Dare County Transportation in advance to confirm eligibility, booking time, fare, pickup, and return for either 300 West Carolista Drive or the separate Soundside Access at 330 West Soundside Road. Do not expect an unscheduled bus at the park, and arrange the return before entering the dunes or soundside trail.

The landmark is the living sand-dune ridge itself, not a monument or building. Use Main Access at 300 West Carolista Drive for the visitor center, dune climb, kite flying, hang-gliding area, and sunset views. Soundside Access at 330 West Soundside Road is a separate wetland and Roanoke Sound destination and does not lead directly to the classic main-dune experience.

Day use, parking, dune access, and Soundside swimming are free. Hang-gliding lessons, kite instruction, sandboard rentals, reservations, and permits charge separately.
