South Tar River Greenway

For the central eastern access use Greenville Town Common at 105 East First Street. The South Tar River section runs west through Town Common to the current trailhead marker at Fairfax Avenue, with a planned extension toward Moye Boulevard.

Town Common is the most developed central access. Choose legal downtown parking or another signed trailhead for the segment you plan, and do not rely on construction or private lots near the western end.

Use the greenway during daylight and posted connected-park hours. Flooding, construction, river conditions, events, and work on the planned BUILD extension can affect sections.

General greenway access is free. Downtown parking, events, programs, rentals, and connected attractions may charge separately.

Town Common provides the most dependable public restroom opportunity during operating conditions. Plan the westbound section as having limited facilities beyond the park.

The developed route uses paved shared paths, but grades, road crossings, bridge approaches, river flooding, construction detours, and the western trailhead connection can vary.

The current South Tar section passes through Town Common and ends at Fairfax Avenue. It is one component of Greenville's roughly nine-mile system; do not confuse planned Moye Boulevard mileage with currently open trail.

A short Town Common out-and-back pairs the trail with an inclusive playground, restrooms, river views, and picnic space. Supervise children at water edges, crossings, bridges, and around bicycles.

Leashed dogs may use the greenway where posted rules permit. Keep leashes short around cyclists and events, remove waste, and follow Town Common rules.

Use Town Common's designated picnic and lawn areas rather than blocking the shared path. Organized gatherings and commercial activity require approval.

Key reference points are Town Common, Tar River esplanade, Town Creek Bridge, Sycamore Hill Gateway Plaza, Memorial Drive bridge area, Fairfax Avenue trailhead, and the planned route toward the VA Clinic on Moye Boulevard.

Tar River flooding, storms, downtown events, bridge work, utility projects, and BUILD-extension construction can interrupt access. Check current City notices after heavy rain and before relying on a through-route.
