Hanging Rock State Park

Use 1790 Hanging Rock Park Road for the main gate. For the signature Hanging Rock Trail, route inside the park to the visitor-center lot at 1005 Visitor Center Drive. The lake bathhouse and Lower Cascades use different parking, so choose the exact destination first.

Park at the visitor center, 1005 Visitor Center Drive, where the 1.8-mile one-way Hanging Rock Trail begins. Use the lake bathhouse lot for swimming and boating, and the separate Lower Cascades lot for that waterfall. Popular lots may fill on fall and fair-weather weekends.

The main gate opens at 7 a.m. and closes at 7 p.m. January and December, 8 p.m. February and November, 9 p.m. March-April and October, and 10 p.m. May-September. Campers and cabin guests must arrive before the gate closes.

NC State Parks does not list a conventional playground among Hanging Rock's amenities. The family-focused alternatives are the visitor-center exhibits, seasonal swim lake, picnicking, ranger programs, and the 0.3-mile Kids in Parks TRACK Trail combining Upper Cascades and the paved Rock Garden Trail. The TRACK route is self-guided, but it crosses Hanging Rock Park Road and only the Rock Garden portion is listed as wheelchair accessible, so adults should supervise the road crossing and choose trails by ability.

Accessible picnic tables and a paved connection are available near the lake bathhouse.
