Great Smoky Mountains National Park

For the North Carolina side, begin at Oconaluftee Visitor Center, 1194 Newfound Gap Road, Cherokee, NC 28719. The park spans many distant valleys and trailheads, so navigate to the exact destination rather than the park name alone.

Choose a specific trailhead, visitor center, overlook, or historic area before driving. Parking tags are required beyond 15 minutes, popular lots often fill between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., and NPS recommends arriving before 8 a.m. for high-demand trailheads.

The park is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Secondary roads, visitor centers, campgrounds, picnic areas, mills, and other facilities use seasonal schedules and can close for weather, construction, or emergencies.

There is no entrance fee, but every vehicle parked longer than 15 minutes must display a valid parking tag unless exempt. Camping, reservations, rentals, and some programs cost separately; a parking tag does not guarantee a space.

Restrooms are concentrated at visitor centers, campgrounds, picnic areas, and major developed stops. There are no restrooms at many trailheads or remote routes, and the campgrounds do not provide showers.

Oconaluftee and Sugarlands visitor centers, many major restrooms, and selected parking areas are accessible. Sugarlands Valley Nature Trail is the park's only ADA-accessible trail; the NPS also offers selected mobility-device reservations.

Trail conditions range from short developed walks to steep, rocky, wet backcountry routes. Check distance, elevation, river crossings, weather, closures, daylight, and current alerts for the exact trail.

Family-friendly starting points include Oconaluftee Visitor Center and Mountain Farm Museum, Sugarlands, scenic drives, short nature walks, picnic areas, ranger programs, and wildlife viewing from a safe distance.

Pets are allowed only in campgrounds, picnic areas, along roads, and on the Gatlinburg and Oconaluftee River trails, and must be leashed. Pets are prohibited on nearly all other trails; never leave them unattended.

The park has ten developed picnic areas with tables, grills, and varying seasonal schedules. Some pavilions are reservable; remove all food and trash because bears and other wildlife are active.

North Carolina highlights include Oconaluftee, Mountain Farm Museum, Mingus Mill, Newfound Gap, Kuwohi, Deep Creek, Cataloochee, Smokemont, waterfalls, historic structures, and extensive mountain trails.

Weather, flooding, wildfire, bear activity, construction, rockfall, and winter conditions can close roads or trails quickly. Check NPS alerts and road status immediately before entering; the park can remain open while your destination is inaccessible.
