Cove Trail

Cove Trail is a named route within McDowell Nature Preserve; use this mapped trailhead and confirm grade, surface, closures and return distance.

Free day-use parking is available near the nature center, waterfront and recreation areas, with roughly 200 spaces in the county inventory. Campers and boaters should follow their reservation or launch instructions rather than the general nature-center pin.

The preserve is open daily from sunup to sundown. McDowell Nature Center is open Monday-Saturday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday 1-5 p.m.; campground, programs, gates and launch access may use separate schedules. This feature may have shorter, seasonal or daylight-only hours.

Restrooms are available at the nature center during building hours and at selected developed camping and recreation areas. Natural trails do not have continuous facilities or water.

General preserve, nature-center exhibit and trail access are free. Camping, reservations, programs and some organized activities charge; fishing-license requirements apply to anglers age 16 and older.

The nature center, developed parking and selected picnic and waterfront facilities have accessible approaches. Natural trails, shoreline, campground terrain and launch surfaces vary; request route-specific guidance before travel.

Leashed dogs are allowed in permitted outdoor areas and campsites under county rules. Keep them out of nature-center exhibits and playgrounds unless service-animal policy applies, and control them around wildlife and other campers.

Discovery Hall, live native animals, a playground, short trails and lake views provide flexible family options. Water access is not a substitute for a guarded swimming area; bring life jackets for appropriate boating activities.

This outer Mecklenburg preserve is not practical by ordinary transit for most visitors. Arrange a vehicle or ride and account for the closing gate and limited cell coverage in natural areas.
