Lone Elk Park

County park gates follow posted daylight hours and wildlife or weather closures. Arrive with enough time to complete the one-way drive before the closing gate; visitor facilities and adjacent attractions keep separate schedules.

Stay in the vehicle on the one-way wildlife drive except at designated parking, picnic and trail areas. Never stop in a travel lane, approach animals or block gates for a photograph.

Enter from Lone Elk Park Road and follow the marked one-way wildlife loop. The elk and bison occupy managed areas; sightings are likely but never guaranteed, and animals may be close to the road.

Restrooms are associated with the visitor and picnic area during posted access. The drive loop and White Bison Trail do not provide facilities at every stop.

General park entry, wildlife drive, reservoir views, hiking and ordinary picnics are free. Donations, reservable shelters, programs and the adjacent World Bird Sanctuary may differ.

The wildlife drive offers viewing from a vehicle. Picnic and visitor areas provide developed access, while White Bison Trail is a hilly natural-surface route with roots, mud and no step-free equivalent.

Pets are prohibited because free-ranging elk and bison create serious safety risks. Do not bring a dog for the drive or trail; qualifying service-animal access should be confirmed directly with county staff.

The wildlife drive can be memorable with children because much of the visit remains in the car. Keep windows and doors controlled near animals, bring binoculars and pair the drive with a short reservoir or picnic stop.

A private vehicle is the practical way to experience the wildlife loop. Direct public transit and safe pedestrian access are limited, and rideshare is unsuitable for a one-way animal drive without a retained vehicle.

Elk and bison are wild, powerful animals. Remain in the vehicle in animal ranges, never feed or approach wildlife, expect temporary closures, and understand that the park cannot guarantee a sighting on every visit.

Check the St. Louis forecast for thunderstorms, tornado or wind alerts, heat and air quality, flooding, ice, and current operator notices. Water features, wildlife drives, trails, river access, cruises, events and outdoor attractions can close independently as conditions change.
