Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge

Open daily during daylight hours only and closed at night. Seasonal hunting restrictions delay entry outside the Hurricane Protection Levee until noon during teal season and November 1-January 31.

Use designated parking only at the selected trail, launch, or access point. Do not rely on the general refuge address to reach every public-use area.

Choose Ridge Trail, Highway 11 launch, Irish Bayou, Joe Madere Marsh, or another official access before driving; mobile service and navigation can be unreliable.

Ridge Trail normally has restrooms and a picnic pavilion, but the Ridge Trail and boardwalk have been closed for reconstruction since March 2, 2026. Other remote access points may have no facilities.

General wildlife observation and approved public access are free. Louisiana licenses, permits, equipment, tours, and some consumptive uses may require fees or documentation.

The Ridge Trail boardwalk was the primary accessible developed route but is closed for reconstruction. Levees, launches, marsh edges, and remote terrain vary greatly.

Leashed dogs are allowed under refuge rules except during authorized hunting use; wildlife, alligators, heat, water, and rough access create serious pet risks.

Wildlife viewing and short developed routes can be memorable, but this is remote habitat, not a playground. Bring water, sun and insect protection, and maintain direct child supervision.

A private vehicle is the practical way to reach most public access points. Confirm the exact route and tell someone your plan before entering remote areas.

The Ridge Trail and Boardwalk remain closed for reconstruction as of this review. Never feed wildlife, expect alligators and insects, carry no expectation of shade or services, and obey seasonal closures and gate signs.

Check New Orleans' hourly heat index, lightning, severe-storm and heavy-rain alerts, flash-flood risk, tropical weather, air quality, and current facility notices. Pavement, play equipment, levees, and exposed riverfront paths become dangerously hot, while low trails and streets may flood quickly.
