Chicago Lakefront Trail

The Lakefront Trail follows normal Chicago Park District operating hours, generally 6 a.m.-11 p.m. Construction, storms, waves, ice, races, and special events can close segments.

Parking varies by beach, harbor, park, and museum. Transit or cycling to a selected access often avoids expensive and crowded lakefront lots.

Choose a named access point and direction before starting. The trail runs from Ardmore Avenue on the north to 71st Street on the south and has many grade-separated entrances.

Restrooms and water are available at selected beaches, harbors, fieldhouses, and parks, not continuously. Seasonal closures create long gaps.

Trail use is free. Parking, bike rental, food, museums, harbors, and concessions charge separately.

The paved trail is broadly accessible, but entrance ramps, underpasses, construction, crowding, windblown sand, standing water, and distance between exits vary.

Leashed dogs may accompany pedestrians where allowed, but pets must stay off the bike trail and out of prohibited beaches and facilities. Keep leashes short in congestion.

Separated pedestrian and bike routes improve safety, but the corridor is fast and crowded. Select a short segment with a known restroom, turnaround, and low-stress access.

CTA and Metra connect to many different sections. Match the station to the access point rather than routing to a generic trail center.

Bikes belong on the bike trail and walkers or runners on the pedestrian trail. Check lakefront weather, wave warnings, trail repairs, and event closures before a long one-way trip.

Check current heat, air quality, storms, wind, lake or river conditions, and operator alerts. Chicago weather can close water, beach, climbing, skating, garden, and event areas independently of general park hours.
