Skidaway Island State Park

Park grounds and buildings may keep different schedules; confirm the current gate and visitor-center hours before leaving. The Avian Trail and observation tower are currently closed because of bridge damage, and a partial campground renovation is scheduled through early 2027.

Turn left at the first traffic light after reaching Skidaway Island; some GPS devices miss this turn. A Georgia ParkPass parking fee is required, with separate parking serving the visitor center, trails, shelters, and camping areas.

Choose the Jane Hurt Yarn Interpretive Center, Sandpiper Trail, Big Ferry Trail, campground, playground, or shelter before entering. Use the official map because camping loops and trailheads branch from different park roads.

The official map identifies public restrooms, showers, laundry, and visitor facilities at developed nodes. Natural trail segments do not provide continuous facilities.

A Georgia ParkPass parking fee is required. Camping, cabins, yurts, shelters, bicycle rentals, reservations, and some ranger programs cost separately; verify current rates when booking.

The park provides an accessibility guide, developed visitor facilities, accessible restroom locations, and mapped firm routes. Boardwalk damage, natural roots, mud, marsh edges, and closed bridges can change individual trail suitability.

Leashed pets are allowed on park grounds and in campsites. Pets are not allowed in camper cabins, and owners must follow trail, wildlife, campground, and facility restrictions.

Two playgrounds, the interpretive center, short Sandpiper loop, wildlife, boardwalks, Junior Ranger-style programs, camping, and picnic shelters support family visits. Match distance and heat exposure to the youngest visitor.

The park is about 15 miles southeast of central Savannah and is most practical by car. Rideshare visitors need a dependable return because destinations are spread within the gated park.

Do not plan around the Avian Trail or observation tower until Georgia State Parks removes the current closure notice. Campground construction may also change loop access, noise, and available sites through early 2027.

Check heat index, thunderstorms, mosquitoes, tide, tropical weather, and Georgia State Parks alerts. Salt marsh, boardwalks, and exposed observation areas offer limited lightning shelter.
