Balanced Rock

Balanced Rock is the park's iconic roadside sandstone formation near the south end of the scenic drive and the P15 parking area. Navigate to the exact Balanced Rock pin rather than the general Garden of the Gods marker. Use the signed P15 parking area and stay on the official path. Do not stop in the travel lane, climb or carve the formation, or walk across fragile soil; the rock and adjacent cafe are separate destinations with different access expectations.

The park has numbered lots near major formations and trailheads, plus the Visitor Center lot and a naturally surfaced overflow lot. Parking is limited on busy summer days; arrive early or use the complimentary seasonal shuttle when it operates. Lots 1 and 16 are the designated choices for larger vehicles and trailers. Balanced Rock follows park hours: 5:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m. November through April and 5:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m. May through October, subject to weather, emergency, event, or resource-protection closures.

The Visitor & Nature Center has accessible restrooms. Additional restrooms are marked near selected park parking and picnic areas on the official map, while some are summer-only; use the center before a long trail outing when availability matters.

Viewing Balanced Rock and entering Garden of the Gods are free; tours, food, purchases, private services, and some programs can cost separately.

Begin at the wheelchair-accessible Visitor & Nature Center, then use accessible parking near the paved, low-grade Perkins Central Garden Trail. Accessible parking appears on the official map; natural-surface trails and some viewpoints have uneven grades. The seasonal shuttle helps with distance but confirm current vehicle accessibility before relying on it.

Yes. Pets must remain on a leash no longer than six feet and stay on trail, and owners must remove waste. A designated off-leash area lies east of Rock Ledge Ranch and south of Gateway Road; dogs must still remain under control there. Separately operated buildings, beaches, gardens, and attractions can set stricter rules.

It is a protected National Natural Landmark focused on red-rock scenery, paved and natural trails, geology, wildlife, guided programs, and the Visitor and Nature Center's exhibits. For equipment play, choose a Colorado Springs neighborhood park rather than climbing on the formations, which is prohibited outside permitted technical climbing. For a child-friendly visit, start at the center, use the easy Central Garden route, carry water, and keep children on marked trails and away from roads and drop-offs.
