Waterfront Park

Use 1600 Pacific Highway, San Diego, CA 92101. The north side contains active recreation and dog facilities; the south side contains the children's play zone and picnic areas.

The park is open daily from 6 a.m.-10 p.m. The office, information booth, reflecting pools, fountain jets, equipment loans, snack bar, and events use shorter or separate hours.

The reflecting pools are currently operating daily from 9:30 a.m.-6 p.m., but the north and south fountain jets remain temporarily off for repairs as of July 31, 2026. Check the official page before traveling specifically for water play.

Use metered street spaces or nearby paid lots; the County recommends transit. The Little Italy trolley stop and MTS bus routes 280, 290, 923, and 992 serve the area.

The children's play zone is on the south side near picnic areas, chess and bocce. The north recreation area has basketball, pickleball, fitness equipment, table tennis, a native garden, dog area, restroom, and information booth.

Yes. The north recreation area has a designated off-leash enclosure. Dogs must remain on a leash no longer than six feet everywhere else and are not allowed in the fountains.

Yes. Picnic areas near the play zone and six Civic Greens can be reserved. Groups of 100 or more, cooking, catering, alcohol, glass, amplified sound, large equipment, or performances require permits.

Yes. Concerts, festivals, setup, maintenance, weather, and private reservations can close all or part of the park. Check the official closure notice and event calendar before a special trip.

Yes. Public restrooms and diaper-changing space are in the park's central fountain and playground area near the County Administration Center. Rinse showers are on the outside wall of the restroom building. Event closures or maintenance can affect access even while other lawns remain open.

Trees provide limited shade near portions of the playground, gardens, and picnic areas, but the Civic Greens, fountains, courts, dog park, and much of the waterfront lawn are exposed. Personal shade canopies are allowed on grass when placed within the park's stake restrictions. The County Administration Center is not a guaranteed public refuge, so identify a nearby open substantial building before visiting during extreme heat, lightning, heavy rain, or high wind.

The downtown civic park is generally flat and developed, with broad paved plazas, sidewalks, promenade routes, and paths connecting the County Administration Center, Civic Greens, playground, fountains, restrooms, courts, dog park, and bayfront. Fountain spray can leave nearby pavement wet and slippery, while lawns, play surfacing, gardens, event fencing, and temporary stages differ from the main hard-surface route. Use the paved perimeter and marked accessible approaches during events or maintenance closures.

Use County Center/Little Italy station on the UC San Diego Blue Line or Green Line. MTS places Waterfront Park about 0.2 miles from the station, beside the County Administration Center. Santa Fe Depot is another practical connection for the park's southern side and regional rail. Check live service and event notices because downtown festivals and waterfront celebrations can increase crowds or alter access.

The historic County Administration Center is the park's central landmark, with lawns and the long interactive fountain extending toward the bay. The playground and garden rooms occupy separate areas, while the northeast corner contains the active recreation zone with basketball, pickleball, fitness equipment, and an off-leash dog area. Check the fountain update before visiting because north and south basins can operate independently during maintenance.

General park, playground, lawns, courts, fitness equipment, dog area, and ordinary fountain access are free. Nearby parking, reservations, concessions, permitted events, and special programs may charge.
