Ruffner Mountain

Trails, preserve, and pavilion are open Tuesday–Sunday 7 a.m.–5 p.m. November–February and 7 a.m.–7 p.m. March–October; closed Mondays. The Nature Center is generally open Thursday–Sunday 9 a.m.–5 p.m., staffing permitting.

Use 1214 81st Street South, Birmingham, AL 35206. This routes to the designated preserve parking area and Nature Center; do not follow unofficial neighborhood approaches to trails.

Nonmembers must buy a $5 visitor parking permit through ParkMobile or the pavilion vending machine; members display their permit. When the lot is full, the preserve is full, and parking along 81st Street is prohibited.

The required visitor charge is structured as a $5 nonmember parking permit. Member parking is included with a valid permit; programs, events, memberships, and rentals may have separate costs.

Plan around the Nature Center and pavilion area for developed visitor facilities. Nature Center access is limited to its Thursday–Sunday schedule and staff capacity, so confirm before relying on indoor restrooms.

Ruffner's preserve trails cross wooded, rocky ridge terrain and old quarry landscapes, with roots, uneven natural surfaces, slopes, and variable distances. Download the official preserve map before leaving the Nature Center area.

Much of the trail system runs through forest and receives substantial tree cover, but quarry openings, overlooks, and disturbed mining areas can be exposed. Carry water and use sun protection in warm weather.

The preserve closes Mondays, outside seasonal hours, and whenever its designated lot reaches capacity. Severe weather, trail damage, prescribed work, staffing, or special operations can also close trails or the Nature Center.

Yes. Ruffner Mountain welcomes dogs on its trails, but they must remain leashed. Leashes protect pets from wildlife, cliffs, quarry hazards, other dogs, and sensitive habitat, and owners must carry out waste.

The pavilion and Nature Center area provide the most practical developed gathering base, but Ruffner is primarily a protected trail preserve rather than a general picnic park. Facility rentals and organized gatherings require advance arrangements, and all visitors still depend on limited designated parking.

The Nature Center and pavilion are the most developed visitor facilities. Preserve trails are natural-surface routes with roots, rocks, grades, quarry terrain, and weather-related mud, so review the official map and contact staff for a route matched to specific mobility needs.

Jefferson County Greenways does not list conventional playground equipment at Ruffner Mountain. Family visits center on the Nature Center's Wildlife Ambassadors, seasonal encounters and programs, pollinator gardens, the pavilion, and age-appropriate forest trails. Choose another Birmingham park for swings or slides. At Ruffner, keep children on marked routes and away from closed mine openings, quarry edges, wildlife, and rough terrain; bicycles are not permitted on the trails.

No pool, splash pad, or designated swimming area is listed at Ruffner Mountain. It is a forested nature preserve and former mining landscape centered on hiking, wildlife, overlooks, quarry and mining history, and Nature Center programs. Ponds, quarry water, creeks, drainage areas, and stormwater are habitat or landscape features rather than inspected water play. Stay on marked trails, carry drinking water, and use a separately listed Birmingham aquatic facility for swimming.

Yes. MAX On-Demand lists Ruffner Mountain as a destination in its Eastside service area and can connect with Woodlawn Transit Center and other neighborhood points. This is not a traditional fixed-route stop: book through the MAX Connect service, confirm the exact trailhead and pickup time, and do not assume the Nature Center entrance and eastern trailhead are interchangeable. Carry enough water and retain a backup return plan where cellular coverage may be weak.

The Nature Center at 1214 81st Street South is the best staffed starting point, with an exhibit hall of native wildlife ambassadors, pavilion, maps, restrooms, and access to the trail network. The signature hike follows Quarry and Quarry Overlook trails toward historic mining remnants, the limestone quarry, Cambrian Overlook, and broad Birmingham views. Ruffner has about 14 miles of mountainous trails and more than one access point, so download the preserve map and do not follow unmarked routes into old mining terrain.
