Red Mountain Park

Red Mountain Park is open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., with separate holiday closings. Visitors should return to the trailhead before the gate closes.

Use 2011 Frankfurt Drive for the main entrance, accessible restrooms, covered pavilion, and water fountain. The second trailhead and parking lot is at 2019 Venice Road; choose it only when your planned trail starts there.

Yes. Both Frankfurt Drive and Venice Road have free parking lots. Space is finite, and trailhead circulation or construction can occasionally alter access, so use only designated spaces.

Accessible restrooms, a covered pavilion, and a water fountain are at the Frankfurt Drive entrance. Portable restrooms are available at several trailheads, but there is no other running water, so carry enough for the hike.

More than 18 miles of shared hiking and biking trails range from approachable routes to rough, rocky, narrow climbs. Use the official map and match the route to your ability; all trails are multi-use.

Yes. The Butler Snow Sensory Trail is designed for wheelchair users and visitors with developmental differences, low vision, or low hearing. The Frankfurt entrance also has accessible restrooms and a covered pavilion.

Remy's is a shaded six-acre off-leash area within Red Mountain Park with separate fenced sections for large dogs, small dogs, and special-needs or single-dog use. Dogs must stay leashed on all trails outside its fences.

Grouped picnic tables are at Regions Quarry and Protective Life picnic areas, with additional tables and benches distributed through the park. Carry out waste and do not enter closed mine openings.

Riley's Roost treehouse is currently listed as temporarily closed, and all historic mine openings are permanently closed for safety. Weather, trail work, construction, and holiday schedules can affect other areas.

Most trails run beneath forest canopy and provide seasonal shade. The Frankfurt Drive entrance has an accessible restroom building, pavilion, and water fountain, while outdoor classrooms and picnic areas offer only open-air cover. Historic mine openings are closed and must never be entered for shelter; during lightning, dangerous wind, or severe weather, return to the entrance facility or a vehicle.

Jefferson County Greenways does not list conventional playground equipment at Red Mountain Park. The family experience is trail- and nature-based, with forest walks, mining-history sites, overlooks, treehouses, picnic areas, and the accessible Sensory Trail. Choose another Birmingham park for swings or slides; at Red Mountain, match the trail to the child's ability and keep children away from closed mine openings, steep slopes, bicycles, heat, and storm-damaged or closed areas. The former ziplines, climbing wall, and adventure courses are not currently open.

No splash pad, pool, or designated swimming area is listed at Red Mountain Park. This is a reclaimed mining landscape managed for trails, forest habitat, overlooks, history, and a dog park. Small creeks, drainage channels, flooded depressions, and rainwater are natural or industrial-site features, not inspected water-play amenities. Carry drinking water, keep children and dogs out of unmapped water, and use a separately listed Birmingham aquatic facility for swimming.

Jefferson County Greenways does not document direct fixed-route transit to the main Red Mountain Park trailhead. Use the current Birmingham MAX trip planner to see whether a perimeter stop works for your date, but do not rely on a generic park result: the entrance is separated from surrounding roads by a large reclaimed mining landscape. If no safe final walking route is shown, arrange a ride to the official entrance and confirm pickup before hiking.

Red Mountain Park preserves Birmingham's mining landscape across a large trail system. Named destinations on the official map include the Welcome Station, Ishkooda No. 13 and No. 14 mine sites, Regions Quarry and Protective Life picnic areas, three treehouses including Riley's Roost, Butler Snow Sensory Trail, Remy's Dog Park, scenic overlooks, and the Adventure Area. Some older maps also show aerial attractions; confirm current operations before expecting ziplines or climbing activities, and never enter mine openings or closed service roads.
